Inspiration

Solig Dag spent 3 weeks on a research trip experiencing Sweden and Denmark's approach to hot/cold immersive design.

These two countries share a similar approach, with community driven larger-scale bathhouses sprinkled along coastlines and waterways. Structures are integrated within nature - lakes, harbours and the sea. Visiting a wide range of bathhouses allowed each experience to be compared and contrasted, taking into account the full concept: scheduling, cost, surroundings, access, design, views, comfort, scale, amenities, privacy and crowd levels. We took in the choice in materials and degree the structure stood out or blended in with nature. Each structure was part of a thoughtfully designed environment supported by surrounding features. Many revealed the enormous support required by the community, municipals and investors to bring the buildings into existence. Not one of the structures was intended for luxury, or built as a short term fad seeking quick profit. At the same time, each one is highly adored by the community bringing with it enormous value. There are currently more in various stages of development, slated to be built.

Most common attributes include:

•. aesthetically pleasing, combining natural and built elements.
•. ease of use, easily integrated into the community's lifestyles - changing room, safe place to keep belongings, ease of scheduling, affordable ($10), include bathrooms and showers, allowing plenty of time - many without time constraints

• well maintained and clean

• various spaces to lounge and enjoy. Many with cafe’s attached.
•  community driven - many people from the community visited 2 to 3 times a week

The experience provided long lasting inspirational design guides. Colorful, thoughtful, intentional, authentic, earthy, celebratory, fun, breathtaking, alive, unapologetic, contagious, courageous, soulful.
