cold bath houses

kallbadhuset

Kallbadhusets are a beloved Swedish tradition—open-air hot/cold bathhouses set along the sea. These structures offer cold-water access, saunas, showers, and amenities like lockers and a café. Whether historic or modern, they are thoughtfully designed extensions of the coastline, inviting people to slow down, gather, and reconnect with nature. They’re not about luxury; they’re about a lifestyle—community, well-being, health and the outdoors, thoughtfully melding architecture with the natural environment.

Solig Dag draws inspiration from these structures, encouraged by the growing interest in sauna culture here in the Pacific Northwest and hopeful that larger-scale public bathhouses may one day find their place along our shores as well. In the meantime, the focus is on creating meaningful hot/cold experiences at a residential scale—adapted to the site, surrounding landscape, budget, and personal goals of those using them.
