varberg kallbadhus
resides on Sweden's west coast, just south of Gothenburg, situated right next to Varberg Fortress, which was built in 1287!
From wall plaques within the cafe:
“The oldest cold bathhouse was from 1866, damaged in a storm in 1884.
The new one to the right was placed farther out in the bay, because there had been problems with sand drifting in. The new bathhouse opened in 1886, but was taken by the storm in 1902!
At that time, the current cold bathhouse was added, the one shown in the picture below. It was renovated in 1997 to be as close as possible to its original condition.
Before the era of cold bathhouses, spa guests were already bathing from a raft by the harbor in 1820. That was later replaced in various stages by bathhouses.”
